El 13 de septiembre del año 2001, cuando el mundo entero estaba aún estremecido por el impacto de los terribles atentados terroristas sucedidos en los Estados Unidos, viajé a Lisboa en un avión vacío, acompañado del actor Enrique Alcides, para presentar allí, en la gala de inauguración del Festival de Cinema Gay e Lésbico, mi film "Sagitario".
Tras la terrible vivencia de las muertes, la desesperación, el dolor y el caos entonces dominante en los aeropuertos, asistir en la noche del día 14 a la sesión inaugural en el hermoso ---- lleno de público fué una experiencia confortadora y exultante.
En Lisboa, y en el marco de un festival de cine que me pareció lleno de rigor, de calidad, de entusiasmo, se desafiaba al terror de la barbarie y a la intransigencia del integrismo del modo más sencillo y hermoso: mostrando films a un público numeroso y entregado. Y de ese modo, el compromiso en defensa de una voz alternativa (que está en la base del Festival Gay e Lésbico) también se convertía en un hermoso acto de reivindicación de las obras de arte como refugio de la tolerancia, el debate pacífico y el conocimiento del Otro.

On the 13th September, 2001, when the whole world was still suffering from the aftermath of the terrible terrorist attacks that took place in the United States, I travelled to Lisbon on an empty plane, accompanied by the actor Enrique Alcides, in order to present my film “Sagitario”, that was to open that year’s edition of the Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. After living through all those deaths, the despair, the pain and the chaos that immediately took over the airports all around, taking a seat among a crowded room at the lovely Fórum Lisboa, to attend the opening night of the festival, on the 14th, was a comforting and exulting experience. In Lisbon, and through a Film Festival that I found rigorous, and full of quality and enthusiasm, we where defying the terror left by the massacre and the intransigency of fundamentalist thought, in the most beautiful and simple way: showing movies to a numerous and responsive audience. And so, the compromise in taking stand for an alternative voice (which is the aim of the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) turned out to be a lovely act that claimed the work of art as a refuge of tolerance, of pacific debate, and a vehicle to understanding the Other.
