The Cemetery I.2 – Cimetière du Montmartre – Paris I

At the foot of the 19th century artists district Montmartre, lies Cimitière du Nord, or Montmartre Cemetery as it is known today. With its two levels of closely packed, aboveground sepulchres, this cemetery resembles a tiny city with a full complement of feline residents. Many of the artists, writers, and musicians who lived and worked in Montmartre rest here, and many striking works of sculpture adorn the tombs.

It contains the graves of Heinrich Heine, Jean- Honoré Fragonard and Hector Berlioz (Avenue Hector Berlioz), Théophile Gautier (Avenue Cordier), Edgar Degas (Avenue de Montebello), Jacques Offenbach (Avenue des Anglais), Stendhal (Avenue de la Croix), Emile Zola (Carrefour de la Croix), François Truffaut, Samuel Beckett and many other notable figures.
