I’ll try to explain my point of view step by step:

MUITO AINDA POR FAZER

Pode parecer contraditório que eu que em 2003 travei uma inglória batalha com a então presidência e vereação da cultura da CML, a propósito da "sugestão" para que retirássemos as palavras GAY e LÉSBICO do título do nosso Festival (que passaria a ser conhecido como o Festival das Diversidades), venha agora, em 2007, motivar a mudança do nome do Festival.

Mas uma coisa é sermos postos em causa na nossa identidade, situação aliás ainda não muito bem apreendida pelas comunidades lgbt portuguesas, nem quanto à sua gravidade, nem quanto às suas consequências, nomeadamente quanto à forma como encorajam que os políticos continuem a olhar para si e para os seus direitos, liberdades e garantias. Outra, e é este o caso, é uma mudança, ou evolução de nome e identidade para uma que, em lugar de ser redutora, amplia a abrangência do conceito e dá, igualmente, ainda maior relevância à nossa existência como comunidade, aproveitando uma unidade internacionalmente reconhecida.
QUEER tem sido um termo adoptado, utilizado e reconhecido cada vez mais pela comunidade internacional. Se acrescentarmos a palavra LISBOA, cidade-capital que se pretende aberta ao mundo e a todas e todos, não só integraremos a rede de eventos culturais QUEER, como promoveremos o nome da nossa cidade (na sua grafia nativa) em todo o Mundo.

O Festival de Cinema Gay e Lésbico de Lisboa sempre apostou em dar visibilidade e dignidade à cultura gay, lésbica, bissexual, transsexual e heterossexual através da sua mostra de cinema, sem fronteiras, intercontinental e sem preconceitos. Tratou-se de um privilégio quiçá por vezes aproveitado por poucos e definitivamente feito por poucos. Desde 1997 este Festival oferece a Lisboa uma selecção única e original, repescada por outros certames, cujos nomes menos "incómodos" lhes permitem tornar suas as "novidades" e as obras da Sétima Arte que este Festival lançou entre nós (veja-se os casos de François Ozon, Sébastien Lifshitz, Monika Treut, Rose Troche entre outros).
Quando instituições que desde sempre apoiaram este festival lhe viram as costas com desculpas técnicas demonstram a forma como encaram a importância da comunidade lgbt em Lisboa e no país, bem como o estado da Cultura no nosso país. Não sendo "só" um caso de homofobia é, ainda, o resultado de uma visão muito limitada da forma como se gerem eventos culturais que contribuem para o desenvolvimento do país e para a melhoria da sua imagem internacional.
Numa sociedade como a portuguesa, que segundo os padrões da Europa Ocidental, é retrógrada e preconceituosa, especialmente, em "novas velhas" áreas como a homofobia e transfobia, ou a misoginia e o machismo, reveste-se de singular relevância a forma como as instituições e as grandes empresas actuam e dão o exemplo. Quando nenhum órgão de soberania se manifesta em relação ao que aconteceu em Viseu, ou quanto à forma como os tribunais lidaram com o caso Gisberta, a cultura assume um papel fundamental de acordar de consciências e de criação de espaços onde imperem atmosferas menos contaminadas pelo preconceito e onde se respire com mais liberdade e é, nas palavras de T. S. Elliot o que "faz com que faça valer a pena viver!"
Infelizmente as nossas próprias comunidades lgbt (à semelhança das nossas elites, políticos, empresários, gestores, etc., etc.), não são, ainda, muito diferentes da sociedade de onde emanam. Perante os ataques, as omissões e o apagamento, os lgbt nacionais manifestam um alheamento preocupante e pouco saudável. Permito-me um desafio final: Acordem e desfrutem deste evento QUEER que vos é oferecido. Nunca foi tão necessário reivindicarmos o nosso orgulho em sermos quem somos e lutar, lutar muito por direitos que já deveríamos ter. Tolerantes somos nós!

It may seem contradictory that after fighting, in 2003, an inglorious battle with the then-President and Culture Councillor of the Lisbon Municipality, who had “suggested” that the words GAY and LESBIAN be withdrawn from the name of the Festival (who would be thereafter be known as the Festival of Diversities), I should be back, in 2007, to justify the name change of the same Festival.

However, it is one thing for our identity to be questioned – a situation that the Portuguese lgbt communities have not yet fully understood, either in its seriousness or its ramifications – namely in how it encourages politicians to perceive them and their rights, freedoms, and warranties. It is quite different, as is the case here, to undergo a change – or evolution – in name and identity, in order to become not more limited, but more encompassing, and give an even greater relevance to our existence as a community, under the umbrella of an internationally-recognised unity.

QUEER is a term increasingly adopted, used, and recognised by the international community. If we add the name LISBOA, a capital city that aspires to openness to the world, and to all, male and female, not only will we become part of a network of QUEER events, but we will also promote the name of our city (in its local spelling) across the World.

The Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival has always invested in offering visibility and dignity to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, and heterosexual culture through the films it has screened, disdaining borders and prejudices, and intercontinental in scope. One might consider it an indulgence enjoyed by few, and certainly born of the work of fewer still. Since 1997, this Festival has offered Lisbon a unique and original selection of productions, all too often cherry picked by other events, whose less “inconvenient” names allow them to claim as their own the new and original works of the Seventh Art that actually debuted in Portugal thanks to this Festival (e.g. the cases of François Ozon, Sébastien Lifshitz, Monika Treut, and Rose Troche, among others).

When institutions that have supported this festival since the beginning resort to technicalities as excuses to turn their backs on it, they demonstrate the consideration and significance in which they hold the lgbt community in Lisbon and around the country, and signal the current state of Culture in our country. It is not “merely” a case of homophobia; it is also the result of a very limited vision of how to manage cultural events that contribute to the development of the country, and to the improvement of its international image.

In a society like the Portuguese, that, according to the patterns of Western Europe, is backwards and prejudiced - especially in “new-old” areas such as homophobia and transphobia, as well misogyny and machismo - the way in which public institutions and large private enterprises act and the example they provide is especially significant. When no political or judicial power speaks up in reaction to the events of Viseu, or to the manner in which the Gisberta case was handled by the courts, culture must take on a fundamental role: to awaken consciences, and create arenas less contaminated by prejudice, where one can breathe in more freely; becoming, in the words of T. S. Eliot, "that which makes life worth living!"

Regrettably, our own lgbt communities (not unlike our elites, politicians, businessmen, managers, etc.) are not yet very different from the society whence they spring. In the face of attacks, omissions, and cancellation, Portuguese lgbts show a worrying and unhealthy aloofness.

I allow myself a final challenge: Wake up, and enjoy this QUEER event that is offered to you. It has never been so necessary as today to claim our pride in being who we are and fighting, fighting hard for rights that should already be ours. We are the tolerant ones!

Last Sunday September 16th I’ve joined a Wig in a Box Party at MAX (Lisboa)Musical selection which revisits the tribute do the feature Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the soundtrack of the above mentioned film and a panorama of the glam rock phenomenon of with it is in a way an heir.

PS: I hope not to chock (too much) my male audience. Yes, was I wearing this pink Marie Antoinette’s wig. There is a first time for everybody!!!

GAY EXHIBITION CANCELED IN MILAN

"Vado Retro"— An exhibition with 150 works about art and homosexuality, from Da Goeden to Pierre et Gilles—has been cancelled at Milan's Palazzo della Ragione. As both the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Der Standard report, the exhibition was already installed when protests were voiced about a "blasphemous" sculpture of the pope made by the Milan artist Paolo Schmidlin. The sculpture, Miss Kitty, features a likeness of the pope dressed in pantyhose.
To calm critics, Vittorio Sgarbi, the city's councilperson for culture and responsible for the exhibition, had already announced that visitors under the age of eighteen would not be allowed to visit. But the measure was not enough. The opening was delayed after Miss Kitty and two other works were taken out of the exhibition. That measure was also insufficient, at least for Milan mayor Letizia Moratti, who requested that another twelve works be removed, due to their pornographic and pedophiliac nature. Sgarbi refused—a refusal that led to the cancellation.Sgarbi, while denouncing the city's censorship, seems to have profited from the scandal.

The councillor, who is also an art historian and collector, purchased Miss Kitty for €20,000 ($27,500). The sculpture is now estimated at €100,000 ($137,700). Censored in Milan, "Vado Retro" will be shown in its entirety in Naples

mmmmmmmmmm, looking forward to get my box: CHiPS, which stood for California Highway Patrol, followed the daily beats of two state motorcycle patrolmen as they patrolled the freeway system in and around Los Angeles. Officer Jon Baker was the straight, serious officer while Frank "Ponch" Poncherello was the more free- wheeling member of the duo; both reported to Sgt. Joe Getraer, who gave out assignments and advice in handling the cases. Each episode saw a compilation of incidents, ranging from the humorous (e.g., a stranded motorist) to criminal investigations (such as hijackings) and tragic incidents (such as a fiery multi-car pile-up with multiple deaths. Other aspects of Ponch and Jon's daily work were highlighted as well; the social lives of both officers (they were both single) often provided the lighter moments.

9 ROTA (2005): The film is based on a true story of the 9th company during the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan in the 1980's. Young Soviet Army recruits are sent from a boot camp into the middle of the war in Afghanistan. The action is not like a boot camp at all. It is very bloody and dirty. The 9th company is defending the hill 3234. They are hopelessly calling for help. But help never comes. "This is war, you kill, or get killed", says the 9-th company leader Khohol (Bondarchuk). They believed that they served their country. But two years later that country ceased to exist.

• Mis à jour le 03.04.07 14h21 a modernité que nous connaissons, la modernité occidentale qui mène à la démocratie, se fonde sur la notion d'autonomie de l'homme. Autos nomos, l'homme qui est loi (nomos) à lui-même (autos). L'homme est donc souverain et établit sa propre loi, au lieu de la recevoir d'en haut et de l'autre, c'est-à-dire d'un Dieu transcendant. L'homme est libre parce qu'il n'est plus obligé d'obéir à des règles qui lui sont imposées de l'extérieur (eteros nomos, hétéronomie), par des pouvoirs terrestres (papes ou rois) qui prétendent incarner la volonté divine. Ainsi, la base de la modernité est l'autonomie, tandis que son aboutissement est la souveraineté de l'autogouvernement. La longue papauté de Karol Wojtyla a constitué une dénégation et une critique ininterrompues de cette modernité - une modernité inachevée puisque les démocraties véritables sont loin de garantir la souveraineté de leurs citoyens. Le pape polonais a accusé le siècle des Lumières d'être le laboratoire qui a engendré - du fait même de la revendication de l'homme à l'autonomie - le nihilisme moral et, par conséquent, les totalitarismes du XXe siècle et leurs assassinats de masse. Voltaire à l'origine des camps de concentration et du goulag, en somme !Tant Jean Paul II que son successeur se sont donc appropriés la célèbre phrase de Dostoïevski : "Si Dieu n'existe pas, tout est permis." Joseph Ratzinger, qui, du reste, a été le principal idéologue de Jean Paul II, ne fait que radicaliser l'anathème lancé par celui-ci contre la modernité, en l'encadrant dans une véritable stratégie culturelle et politique. Et cette croisade obscurantiste a aujourd'hui de nouvelles chances de réussir, grâce notamment au climat de fondamentalisme chrétien qui accompagne la présidence de George W. Bush aux Etats-Unis.A la base de cette stratégie se trouve l'idée selon laquelle, face à la crise des valeurs qui mène peu à peu le monde globalisé à sa perte, à travers des conflits incontrôlables et une méfiance des démocraties à l'égard d'elles-mêmes, "seul un Dieu peut nous sauver". Le véritable choc des civilisations voit donc d'un côté les religions dans leur ensemble, et de l'autre l'inévitable dérive nihiliste de toute société voulant se passer de Dieu et d'une "loi naturelle" qui, cependant, coïnciderait parfaitement avec la loi divine.Le discours de Ratisbonne, qui a poussé plus d'un gouvernement islamique à déchaîner contre le pape le fanatisme des foules, était en réalité une invitation adressée aux monothéismes (y compris et surtout à l'islam) à faire front commun face à la véritable menace qui pèse sur la civilisation : l'athéisme et l'indifférence, bref une laïcité qui prétend exclure Dieu de la sphère publique et de l'élaboration des lois.Naturellement, Joseph Ratzinger ne place pas toutes les religions monothéistes sur le même plan. Il réserve la primauté à la religion chrétienne dans sa version "catholique apostolique romaine", qui lui viendrait de sa capacité - que seul le catholicisme détient de façon complète - à être une religion non seulement de la foi mais aussi du logos. C'est-à-dire une religion capable non seulement d'assumer la révélation divine, mais aussi d'avérer en soi la raison humaine et sa tradition, de Socrate à nos jours. Une religion des vraies lumières, de la raison "correctement entendue".Ainsi, si la doctrine de l'Eglise de Rome et de son souverain pontife constitue une vérité qui n'est pas seulement de foi mais aussi de raison, les parlements et les gouvernements ne devraient donc pas promulguer de lois en conflit avec cette doctrine, car elles seraient en violation avec la "nature humaine", avec cet animal rationnel qu'est et doit être l'homme. Et comme, nous le savons, sont contre nature selon l'Eglise catholique l'avortement, la contraception (préservatif compris), le divorce, la recherche scientifique sur les cellules souches, l'homosexualité et, bien sûr, l'euthanasie ou la décision d'un malade en phase terminale, soumis à d'indicibles souffrances, de ne pas prolonger sa torture.Dans tous ces domaines, qui vont en s'élargissant avec les progrès de la science, Joseph Ratzinger continue de répéter qu'un parlement et un gouvernement qui approuveraient des lois "contre nature" deviendraient ipso facto illégitimes, même s'ils ont été élus selon les règles de la démocratie constitutionnelle. C'est la même position que Karol Wojtyla avait déjà soutenue devant le Parlement polonais (le premier élu démocratiquement après un demi-siècle !), allant jusqu'à définir l'avortement comme "le génocide de notre époque". Prononcées dans le contexte polonais, des paroles de ce genre établissent une effroyable équation entre Holocauste et avortement, entre une femme qui avorte et un SS qui jette un enfant juif dans un four crématoire.Ces mots - hélas - ont été pardonnés à Karol Wojtyla, même de la part du monde laïc, en raison de son "pacifisme". Joseph Ratzinger, de son côté, a entamé une nouvelle phase. Il est convaincu que la crise des démocraties offre à l'Eglise de nouveaux espaces d'influence inespérés, auprès de la classe politique comme de l'opinion publique. Sa stratégie est explicite, y compris en termes de temps et de lieux. L'Italie, considéré comme le maillon faible, est le pays où l'on doit commencer par expérimenter cette véritable "reconquête" pour passer ensuite à l'Espagne, sans perdre l'espoir d'une future action en Allemagne. La France, dans son état actuel, apparaît encore trop ancrée dans sa laïcité républicaine pour qu'une croisade culturelle et politique obscurantiste puisse être envisagée.Le coeur d'une telle stratégie, c'est-à-dire le front commun des religions contre les lumières de l'homme autonome, est voué à l'échec. Toute religion prétend être "plus vraie" que les autres. Le conflit qui a suivi le discours de Ratisbonne ne restera pas isolé.Mais les dégâts que cette nouvelle sainte alliance entre catholiques et islamistes (et d'une partie croissante du judaïsme, en plus des protestantismes d'Amérique du Nord et d'Amérique du Sud) provoque dans sa pars destruens contre la démocratie sont déjà considérables. En Italie, alors que 70 % de la population s'est déclarée en faveur de l'euthanasie, l'Eglise est parvenue à bloquer une loi incroyablement modérée sur les couples de fait. Une gigantesque manifestation cléricale de masse, avec la bénédiction de la conférence épiscopale italienne, est prévue le 12 mai.Comme en écho, la conférence épiscopale espagnole annonce une nouvelle offensive. De son côté, le monde laïc se tait, par inattention ou opportunisme. Et pendant ce temps, l'attaque contre la science darwinienne s'étend, de la Maison Blanche à la cathédrale de Vienne.

Golub, who always painted in a unique figural style, drew upon diverse representations of the body from ancient Greek and Roman sculpture, to photographs of athletic competitions, to gay pornography; often pulled directly from a huge database he assembled of journalistic images from the mass media. He likened his painting process to sculptural technique and employed a method of layering and scraping away paint, sometimes using a meat cleaver (knife), leaving varying amounts of canvas untouched.

The bear community is a subculture in the gay community. Bears are gay men with stocky or heavyset builds, and usually have hairy bodies and facial hair. Bears often exhibit an outwardly masculine appearance. Some bears place great importance on presenting a hyper-masculine image and shun interaction with men who display effeminate style and mannerisms. Bears are typically contrasted with twinks.

There is much debate as to the definition of a bear, with some saying that anyone who self-identifies as a bear is a bear, and others arguing that bears must have certain physical characteristics, such as a stocky build, hairy chest, and facial hair.

The bear community originated in San Francisco in the 1980s as an outgrowth of the leather and "girth and mirth" communities. It was created by men who felt that mainstream gay culture was unwelcoming to men who did not fit a particular bodily norm (thin, hairless and young). In turn, some people both in and out of the bear community criticize it as tending to exclude people who do not fit into their own standards of what a "real man" is.

The bear community has spread all over the world, with bear clubs in Australia, South America, North America, and Europe. Bear events are common in those areas and lots of flux and interaction occur between members of the different communities.Often when a bear spots another bear in public and wants to express physical attraction, he makes a growling noise ("Grrrr!") or says "WOOF!"

An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or divinity. It is given in fulfilment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshipper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. Shrines decorated with ex-votos are often the destinations of pilgrimages.

Riot police used violence to break up a gay rights demonstration in Moscow yesterday and arrested several European parliamentarians in what critics say is the latest violation of human rights in Russia.
A group of gay rights activists came under attack from neo-Nazi thugs when they tried to present a petition asking Moscow's mayor, Yuri Luzhkov, to lift a ban on a Gay Pride parade. He has previously dubbed gay rallies "satanic". Witnesses said riot police watched as far-right skinheads chanting "death to homosexuals" beat up several activists.
The police failed to arrest the skinheads but detained several of the Europeans - including the German MP Volker Beck, a member of the Green party, and the radical Italian MEP Marco Capatto. Riot police threw Mr Capatto into a police van. "Why don't you protect us?" he shouted. "It was absolutely shocking," the gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell told the Guardian yesterday. "The police stood there while people knocked me to the ground and kicked me. Four or five neo-Nazis attacked me. The police watched. At a certain point the police then arrested me and let my neo-Nazi attackers walk free."
Religious orthodox protesters and skinheads hurled eggs and stones - injuring Mr Tatchell in the eye. They also attacked Richard Fairbrass, the gay singer from the pop group Right Said Fred.
"When we were in the police van the police taunted us," Mr Tatchell said after his release. "They said, 'Are you a member of the sexual minority?' We said yes. They said, 'We are going to have some fun with you at the police station.' What happened here shows the flawed and failed nature of Russia's transition to democracy. There is no right to protest in Moscow."
The arrest of European parliamentarians is likely to further depress relations between the EU and Russia - which are at a lowpoint after an acrimonious summit this month in the Russian city of Samara. The chairwoman of Germany's Green party, Claudia Roth, yesterday called on the chancellor, Angela Merkel, to raise the issue of rights with President Vladimir Putin at next month's G8 summit.
As a member of the Council of Europe and signatory to the European convention on human rights, Russia is obliged to allow demonstrations. "It has been shown once again today that human rights are systematically abused in Putin's Russia," Ms Roth said.
The activists had tried to deliver a petition signed by 50 MEPs calling on Moscow's mayor to respect freedom of assembly, but 30 of them were arrested and they did not make it to his city hall office. Mr Beck was later released. Three Russian gay rights campaigners were kept in custody and charged with disobeying police.
Neo-Nazi thugs and an orthodox priest attacked the activists when they were freed several hours after their arrest, witnesses said. "This is terrible but I am not scared," a Russian named Alexey said, blood streaming from his face. "This is a pretty scary place, a pretty scary country if you are gay. But we won't give up until they allow us our rights."
Russia decriminalised homosexuality in 1993, but the gay community is still widely reviled. Last year Mr Luzhkov refused to allow a Gay Pride rally to take place.
